Tehran has a long and rich past as the capital of the Seljuk Empire, then a powerful trading city, the seat of power of the Qajar dynasty and eventually becoming the largest city and capital . from Iran. It has probably undergone numerous metamorphoses in culture, urban planning and societies (Birch). Yet, now more than ever, a change is occurring that threatens to wipe out what came before. Tehran has very few protected buildings within its borders and as a result much of the city has already experienced redevelopment and "improvement" and this pace will likely continue to accelerate as Western culture continues its unstoppable conversion of the globe.
