  • Essay / Importance of Risk Management in Event Management

Regardless of the type or size of an event, fire safety aims to protect every life from fire, including smoke, fumes or panic (NFPA, 2011). Indeed, any fire occurring during an event could lead to economic losses, or even loss of life, and the amount of brand and reputation losses for the event company or event site is immeasurable. For example, a Jan. 27 nightclub fire in Santa Maria killed 235 people, mostly students, and injured more than 100 people as they celebrated the 500-day mark until the FIFA World Cup in Brazil 2014 (One hell of a night; the Brazilian nightclub fire, 2013). In the report it is shown that the event organizer could have been unaware of the power and danger of the use of torches and the fire safety of the ceiling soundproofing foam which caused this most disastrous fire since over 50 years (One hell of a night; the Brazilian nightclub fire, 2013). Additionally, Brazil had to suspend all celebratory events and activities to mourn the victims of the disaster for three days. If the event organizer could identify the fire risk beforehand and do something to reduce the risk, such as changing the location of firing the flares, these enormous human and economic losses would likely be reduced.
