Defy is a book that didn't turn out the way I hoped, which is both a good and bad thing. We are treated to a new world where Alexa must hide her true gender to survive and be free, while protecting the prince and waging a war. There are tender moments as well as exciting moments, which make this a pretty decent start to the series. Defy in a few words is: easy, fast and different. When it comes to high fantasy, I expect world-building and am incredibly fond of extreme detail. However, this is where Defy started to worry me, the world building is minimal. I really liked that it was set in a more tropical location where there is humidity and rainforests, instead of the typical temperate zones I usually read about, but I didn't feel the immersion at all. which I'm used to in novels like this. We don't get a lot of detail about the world of Antion or Belvon that would have cemented these places as "real" in my mind. I see this as an excellent high fantasy novel for beginners, in which someone not accustomed to immense detail can wet their palette with...
