Essay / Epigastric Pain Case Study - 981
It is an open sore in the lining of the stomach, intestines, or esophagus. Peptic ulcers have different names depending on their location. Like gastric ulcers which are stomach ulcers. Duodenal ulcers are those found in the small intestine, while those found in the esophagus are called esophageal ulcers. Duodenal ulcers are more common than gastric ulcers. While gastric ulcers are found to be more malignant than duodenal ulcers. The most common cause of duodenal and gastric ulcers is H-pylori (Leik, 2014). People with peptic ulcer disease complain of epigastric pain and burning, which may be short or long lasting. Signs and symptoms of peptic ulcers are burning or pain in the upper abdominal area, nausea, vomiting, burping and bleeding, which may cause bloody stools. This pain can occur one to three hours after eating food or when the stomach is empty. The pain may be worse at night or occur intermittently for weeks. It should be noted that the pain of peptic ulcer disease can be relieved by food or by taking an antacid. Diagnostic tests for peptic ulcer include: a blood test to check for H-pylori, a stool sample is sent to the lab to see if there is blood in the stool, a breath test to urea is performed to check for the presence of H-pylori, upper endoscopy is performed. To check if there is a problem with the digestive system, an upper gastrointestinal x-ray is obtained to check the images of the stomach and intestines (Micromedex, 2016). Treatment for peptic ulcer disease also depends on the cause. If H-pylori is identified, triple therapy is indicated, namely Biaxin, amoxicillin and proton pump inhibitor (PPI), for 6 to 8 weeks to allow the ulcers to heal. Quadruple therapy may also be indicated, namely bismuth subsalicylate, Flagyl, tetracycline, and proton pump inhibitor (PPI) for 4 to 6 weeks or more (Leik, 2014). However, if the disease is not caused by H-pylori, lifestyle changes are recommended.,
