Too Much of a Good Thing What would humanity achieve without technology? In the 21st century, technology has given a wide platform to individuals and is used for different purposes: shopping, working, entertainment, education and communication around the world. Although we use electronics daily to make our lives easier, overusing technology has created a plus in society. In a recent study, 52% of teens say social media has improved their friendships (Wallace). While social media and all general technology is often used for positive reasons, it has also been proven that it can cause major problems within close relationships as well. Teenagers feel compelled to stay vigilant and check their social media accounts. The concept of Internet safety is often taught to adolescents as early as high school. However, recent research has shown that these teachings are not effective. Problems related to parents ignoring what their children post online include cyberbullying and sexting; which are common negativities that minors are subjected to in recent years. As a result, children spend more time in their rooms using their computers than outside, doing physical activities and spending time with friends and family. The phrase “let kids be kids” has evolved from letting kids play outside to letting kids use their tablets all day. Families are slowly but surely being torn apart by their use of technology and they aren't even aware of it. Parents use their children to like them on sites like Facebook in the hopes that the posted videos will go viral and embarrass their children. In 2014, a mother was arrested and charged with child abuse for posting a video of her beating her son for getting involved in gang activity.
