In 1999, police officers killed a man they were chasing for three straight hours. As he was chased, five California television helicopters broadcast the event live and the entire public, including his family, saw his death. Church teaching reveals whether live broadcasting of acts of violence is ethical or unethical. Over the years, the media has increased coverage of actual acts of violence, but these are not beneficial to the common good due to the negative effects they have on human dignity. First, the Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches that all media limit themselves to what the common good requires. To illustrate this, Pope Paul VI says that “the information provided by the media is at the service of the common good” (CCC 2494). This shows that any information disclosed by the media must be beneficial to the common good. Second, the Catechism affirms that all media distributed to the public must never oppose the common good. For example, Pope Paul VI says that “[the media] must adjust their economic, political or artistic and technical aspects so as never to oppose the common good” (Inter Mirifica 11). Revealing that the media must not disclose any information that could “oppose the common good”. Third, the media denounce gratuitous acts of violence, which undermine the value of human dignity. For example, the Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches that “social justice can only be achieved by respecting the transcendent dignity of man” (CCC 1929). This means that “real” reporting can only benefit the common good if it respects human dignity. Finally, the Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches that whatever the physical or mental state of the person(s) in the media, one must always respect the medium of the paper and the dignity of the person. person(s) must always be respected. Thus, the media must take into consideration the harm they may cause to the public and the loss of respect for human dignity. In conclusion, media coverage of real acts of violence in the news does not benefit the common good. The media uses the human right to information as a tool to disseminate as much information as possible for profit. They do not censor any gratuitous violence. Journalists are blamed because of the responsibility they take when they release information they have learned to the public. Additionally, uncensored violence can harm the public and disrespect the dignity of the person(s). Over the years, the media's view of what news is has changed dramatically, from news to entertainment. No matter where you go or what you watch, for some reason there is always violence..
