Essay / Five basic facts about crime statistics associated...
In the first article, the main argument Morris presented was the connection between crime and race, how that influences the outcomes of what happens to the individual. . He links statistics to compare them between white and black men; Within these numbers, it shows how race plays a huge role in the outcomes of some of the major crimes committed in our country. In his article, he gives five basic facts about race-related crime statistics, specifically those between the white and black races. One of the facts he presents in this article is that "for every white man in prison, there are more than seven black men in prison" and here he points out that race is also a target of the crimes committed against them " 1 in 30”. (black babies) will die victims of intentional or non-negligent homicide” (Slotnick, p. 324). The first subject or question he addresses is the comparison of professional and civic obligations; it highlights the fact that once again, race plays a huge role in the statistics found in neighborhoods where crime is most reported. It tells how Max Weber speaks of his obligations as a citizen and also as a professional; Basically, if we as lawyers view racial discrimination as a factor within the system, we have a professional obligation to do something and work to correct the problem. The second issue he addresses is the crime rate that is often associated with race and the data he has collected on rates from white and black men. These numbers are very relevant to why he thinks race plays a large role in how people are viewed in crime rate data, and why there are crimes that white people commit more than black people...... middle of paper ... ..the biggest threat should be people being convicted based on their race, that's a problem because then you get wrongful convictions which are more than often uttered due to racial discrimination, simply because a black man is walking in a neighborhood. the place where a crime was committed does not mean that he committed it; but because he was in the wrong place at the wrong time, law enforcement at the crime scene he was near or passing by assumes that because he fits the criminal profile, this must be him. Now, the least of our problems has to be the changing role of federally appointed trial judges and that is because most of these changes happening in the federal court system are not that complicated. that they cannot be solved and treated with simplicity.
