Electronics is one of the most lucrative job opportunities around. Some of the highest paying jobs in America are in electronics. But where does video game design fit in? Game design is a complex career field because it is made up of several different aspects such as setup, technical issues, and storytelling. There are many steps to following a career. Before you can actually start designing a game, you need to plan and prepare. The job of a game designer is to think about all parts of the game. To do this, designers use the Game Design Document, from GDD. The GDD covers all parts of a game, although it is not necessary in all games. It starts simply with the theme, story, and backstory, but gets very detailed, right down to levels, objectives, items, and inventory. This document is also used in board game design because it covers the mechanics of the game and how it is played. Once the game is planned, a team must be formed to carry it out. A typical team will be divided into three groups: graphics, user interface, and programmers. The graphics team will work on the appearance of the game. This can really affect how the player feels when playing because a poorly designed world will not keep the player coming back. The UI team is working on the control the player gets. They design the control and interactivity of the game, such as which elements can be moved and which cannot. They also decide what needs to be done to accomplish certain activities, such as a successful withdrawal. The final task is left to the programmer. These are the people who “make” the game; they are responsible for bringing the game to life. Depending on the type of game the company offers, more or fewer people and roles may be needed. For example, in a two-penny industry... middle of paper ...... programming and also video games which is actually a big part of this career path. There are gaming companies that ask you what games you have played and what you like. If you don't love what you do, you won't do it well. All parts of game design take time and dedication. To be successful in this career, I plan to go to college and major in game design, specifically game programming. Works Cited “Game On”. Boys' lives. May 2013. Print.
