  • Essay / Analysis of the film Tsotsi - 888

Tsotsi, a film which won the Oscar for best foreign film in 2006. A film which shows hope and depicts the story of a bad and rebellious teenager who transforms into a good, responsible, peaceful and obedient citizen. The film is based in South Africa. What comes to mind when you see the word South Africa? Is this apartheid? racial segregation where contact between whites and coloreds was limited or Nelson Mandela; who was involved in the process of removing this partition in South Africa or perhaps the 2010 FIFA World Cup, or the unique blend of culture, wildlife and beautiful and attractive landscapes. The main character known as “Tsotsi”; a South African term for gangster or thug is a nineteen year old teenager who takes viewers on a journey into his horrific childhood and his incredible decision to change his life and not express his resentment towards the world. In Tsotsi, I believe there are two main themes that are presented to us in many different forms throughout the film; the first is HIV/AIDS as it is shown to us in many different forms throughout the film, the second theme is reform, the turning of the tables; the transition from evil to good; and the term “decency”. The film is filled with intense emotion where Tsotsi, a minor gang leader; showing no expression, no sympathy and didn't care who he killed for a small amount of money. All of this was transformed by the vulnerability of a small, innocent, helpless baby. The film begins by distinguishing and giving each member of the gang a character profile. At first, they are presented to us as uneducated people who played games of chance and dice but were incapable of counting points. Only a failed teacher named Boston is found among papers such as pianos, violins and harmonicas. Showing that Tsotsi had gone from wildness to coolness. At the beginning of the film we meet Tsotsi wearing dark clothes covering his face with hoodies showing that he is planning mischief and trouble. However, when he goes to return the baby to his rightful owners, we see him wearing smart, white clothes as well. representing serenity and enlightenment. The film is a very moving, sensitive and emotional story of redemption. The story of how a heartless young thug can transform into a tender-hearted guardian. This demonstrates that despite a person's poor living conditions, horrible events, and lack of heart. You can adapt to your environment and situations, you can also transform your life. Everyone has good in them, you just choose to value it and use it or not appreciate it and throw it away..
