Wilmot and Hocker discuss various ways of evaluating conflict, particularly when we choose to intervene in the conflicts of others. They discuss systems theory as one of the beneficial theories that can help us intervene in conflicts. A systems theory is a comprehensive assessment of the functioning of the overall system and the search for patterns of communication within systems (Wilmot and Hocker, 2011). Understanding the nature of organizations can be important for someone looking to find a more organized way to manage and intervene in conflict. Sometimes conflicts get to the point where you are so frustrated that it can become confusing or you can't see the interpersonal dynamics that are happening. In our last unit, we learned that emotions can have effects. Styles asks us what individual styles each party used. Negotiation asks us if the parties are capable of negotiating with each other? Why or why not (Wilmot & Hocker, 2011)? As we know, the case study is about newlyweds disagreeing over domestic matters. The conflict spirals out of control and shows an example of what poor communication or poor communication styles lead to. Monica says, “I really want pizza tonight. Or maybe we could go to the movies. Or maybe both! » (Davis, p. 1). His statement was, in a way, the trigger for the conflict. Between Monica and Enrique's relationship, Enrique is the man of the house and Monica is the woman of the house. They both define their role in the house in terms of what a typical household should look like. Enrique works very hard to provide for his new family and Monica works just as hard and takes care of the housework. Their gender dictates the roles assigned to them within the household and this shows in their conflict. In a way, this is important because it is the cause of the ongoing conflict and the reason it is escalating. Enrique stays away from the household chores while Monica submits and does them. At one point in the case study, Enrique even says, “Okay. All right. I'm going to see Jack for a while, while you clean the house" (Davis, p..
