Metaphysically Speaking: In Search of PeaceIn the 17th century, the metaphysical poems Peace and The Sun Rising, written by George Herbert and John Donne respectively, both revolve around elaborate personification in order to detail a journey. in which one seeks a physical manifestation of the idea of peace and the other, without ever leaving his room, seeks to rid him and his lover of the harassing sun to also find peace. The two men's journeys for peace run parallel. The authors manage, through their similar implementation of the aforementioned allusion, apostrophe and personification, to develop analogous poems with contrasting themes of religion and very physical love. Personification in poems creates a greater physical connection and gives a feeling of real presence. In Herbert's Peace, he asks "Sweet Peace" where she could possibly "dwell" while he "humbly" desires the answer. Every place he visits he asks if peace is there or is already deeply convinced that he must be able to find it there, but he encounters unfortunate misfortune. Only in the end does he realize that peace has always been with him and that an honest man seeking peace will not be denied him. The honest man in him is seen with the humility in which he seeks peace. He is somehow one with peace. The constant availability connects perfectly with the religious theme prevalent in the Church of his day and would in no way negate a man of pure desire seeking to find God. Donne also uses personification, but in a different way. The journey in his poem seeks to rid itself of an “old fool,” the “unruly Sun” who, for some reason, shines “through the curtains” to “call” the lovers. For him, her love is the most important thing in ...... middle of paper ...... depiction of love between the two and allusion to both present-day spice India and Indians of the West with their mines help to show the immensity that he thinks his room encompasses. If even the riches of two places across the world are there with it, there is no doubt that the room contains much more. The allusion plays on his arrogance while telling the Sun that compared to him, it's nothing. Metaphysical poetry all has connections regardless of the subject. The authors were placed in this category because of similarities in their writing styles, even though some devices were used in different ways. The implementation of the devices by Herbert and Donne creates the same emotions and the same objectives, simply placed in different contexts. Their poems are parallel in the search for peace even if one concerns religion and the other love..
