Essay / Advantages and Disadvantages of Animal Testing - 1160
Animals in research have made many contributions leading to the treatment and cure of diseases that affect humans. Through the use of animals in experiments, a better life has been achieved. “Sweet are the uses of Adversity.” This quote from Williams Shakespeare proves that with all good comes evil, just like the use of animals in research. Many oppose the use of animals for research, saying they are not morally or ethically stable. The results of animal experiments can potentially cure many medical problems such as cancer or the common cold. However, there is controversy, mainly ethical, around the methods used. Animal experiments used in biological research have contributed to many advances in human medicine. Thanks to these experiments, a reduction in infant mortality, a longer lifespan and an increase in quality of life were achieved (American Medical Associaton 3). Through indirect or direct experimentation, almost all medical advances can be attributed to animal research. Control and elimination of diseases such as smallpox, polio and measles have been achieved with animals. Blood transfusions, burn treatment, open brain and heart surgery all happened the same way (American Medical Association 54). “Biomedical advances depend on animal research, and failing to use them would deprive humans and criminals of the benefits of research” (American Media Association74). Through animal research, we could find solutions to AIDS, cancer, heart disease, aging and birth defects. As Lord Adrian said: "The use of live animals in scientific research may be considered justified if it is likely to produce an appreciable benefit to society, if there is no means of carrying out the research in question... middle of article. .....those who use animals in their research. Since 1971, more than 500,000 Americans have died from cancer each year. This represents a 74% increase since Nixon initially signed the bill (Slezcpecki 7). Animal research is a very controversial subject. Research using animals has helped us and will continue to help us discover things that would take much longer without the help of the animal. Today, thanks to animal research, many treatments and diseases have been discovered that were fatal years ago. As good as it sounds, there is always a dark side to every good story. Some animals suffer abnormal suffering and bodily harm. Unreasonable suffering is something that is not approved by society. This subject may never be discussed. Knowing the pros and cons of this question will help the reader decide for themselves whether animal research is immoral or useful..
