Essay / The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand and The Open Boat by...
Fountainhead and The open boatIn today's world, there are many types of people who do things of their own free will. In the novel "The Fountainhead", it is shown that people made their own decisions to go where they wanted to go, of their own free will. In the story “The Open Boat,” men showed that they opened themselves to their own instincts and followed their own path to survive. Both stories show many forms of determinism, objectivism, naturalism, collectivism, realism, etc. All must be shown of their own free will. Ayn Rand was young when she was exposed to many forms of society. She spent most of her childhood in Russia. She learned the methods of capitalism and its flaws. She hated capitalism and objectivism. She has written many novels that expose society for what it is and how bad it can be. Ayn laid out much more in the story of The Fountainhead. In “The Fountainhead,” Ayn Rand shows her own views on free will. It belligerently shows how the world has come to collectivism to live its life. "'Good.'" Mrs. Keating said, "Go to Fine Arts. It's a grand place. A whole ocean away from home. Of course, if you leave, Mr. Francon will take someone else." People will talk about it. Everyone knows that Mr. Francon picks the best boy in Stanton for his office every year. I wonder what it would be like if another boy got the job, but I guess that didn't matter? 'importance.' (P.35). This quote shows collectivism by showing how "emotional" one can be about not being better than their peers around them. Ayn's view on free will. in this quote shows how Peter Keating had the choice of accepting Guy Francon's job offer or going to the Academy of Fine Arts for architecture, even though his mother pressured him to accepts... ... middle of paper ...... human life using nature and the environment around said person, in "The Open Boat". They both use irony, naturalism, objectivism, determinism, etc. to demonstrate modern human nature. Free will is something that every man/woman possesses and over which only they have control. Every day we make choices that affect us positively or negatively. I have seen people give up their own free will, only to release the pressure of society, encompass them, and become “middlemen” (Rand). Free will is now expressed vaguely and the true definition of the terminology is long lost. But definitions are opinions and my opinion on free will is that we as humans have a choice and it is up to us to use what we have, we have free will to do what we want. It is important to be free. It is important to make your own choices. And it's the most important thing to be different.
