  • Essay / What caused World War II? - 698

WWII DBQWorld War II was caused by the Treaty of Versailles because Germany took responsibility for all the damage after World War I. The name given to Germany taking all the responsibility is the war guilt clause. As shown in the 1914 and 1928 maps of Europe (doc 1) after WWI they (Germany) lost land. Then, in 1924, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Finland and Romania were annexed to Russia. Ever since Germany lost a boy after World War I and took responsibility for it, she has become bitter towards the French. Germany basically had its most valuable lands stolen by the French, which was its pride and of course upset Germany. From this, one could deduce that indeed, Germany was unhappy with the decisions taken. As described in the Treaty of Versailles (doc 2) as well as Articles 51 and 119, Germany must reluctantly cede land. Then, in Articles 231 and 232, it contains a war guilt clause. They claim that the Germans are responsible for all damage and/or losses resulting from the First World War. To add, it was said that Germany was doing “badly” and that France had every right to withdraw Alsace and Lorraine. . From this, one could deduce, as was said previously, that Germany was upset. Hitler's speech (doc 3) shows Hitler's point of view, which is obviously a very biased point of view in which everything that happened was unjust. Hitler criticizes the Treaty of Versailles and claims that the German people do not agree with the decisions made by the government. As in documents 1 and 2 it states that Germany had land confiscated and was blamed for a bunch of things, so the citizens believe that if they had stayed at war they definitely would have could win. What this shows is Hitler's biased views towards his country. From the middle of Hitler's paper, ready to fight or not. Cooper also states that the British government was afraid to stand up to him because they were afraid of what Hitler might say during his speech and that there would be no backing down afterwards. It can be inferred that Britain wants to declare war on Germany, but is afraid to say anything to Hitler. In conclusion, the Treaty of Versailles is the reason why World War II was caused. The Treaty of Versailles had placed all damages and payments on Germany. To add, not only was this caused because of the treaty, but also because France and Britain declared war on Germany because they invaded Poland which allied with them.
