Since around 1250 BC, the ancient Egyptians had created and practiced the capture and display of animals in what today are called zoos ( Fravel). Records describe exotic animals such as birds, lions, giraffes and tigers in captivity (Fravel). Since then, zoos have continued to entertain millions of people with the opportunity to observe exotic animals up close. Even in ancient Greece, exotic animals were displayed in battle arenas and enclosed viewing areas. Originally in America, zoos were simply created so that royalty and the wealthy could display their exotic animals to the public (Leolupus). Today, as species are threatened and habitats disappear around the world, zoos serve a new purpose beyond simply exhibiting animals: conservation. (Fravel). When you think of a zoo, you either think of a fun and entertaining place that offers up-close and exciting exhibits of wild animals that you would never have the chance to see otherwise, or of a place where people continue to suffer , unhappy animals in captivity. for entertainment and display. However, whatever your opinion and despite stereotypes, some zoos have evolved to serve alternative and useful purposes. Although some zoos face controversy due to allegations such as lack of space and quality care, neglect and cruelty, some zoos have programs specifically designed to help and protect animal species. For example, these zoos have programs that support conservation efforts such as breeding. Through breeding, these endangered species, two examples of which being the golden lion tamarin and Przewalski's wild horse, have significantly increased in number (Smithsonian).
