  • Essay / Little Bee and Incendiaryby Chris Cleave - 1017

In Little Bee and Incendiary by Chris Cleave, the characters Little Bee and the unnamed narrator, respectively, undergo a traumatic experience at the beginning of the books. Little Bee was confined in an immigration detention center upon her arrival in England because she did not have legal documents proving her age. Meanwhile, the unnamed narrator's life is destroyed by a terrorist attack that kills her husband and four-year-old son. Both characters lose hope and faith in their world and adapt to their new lives accordingly. Little Bee disguises herself physically, verbally and legally in order to protect herself from the dangers of her new life. The narrator fights her emotional breakdown by helping to investigate the instigator of the terrorist attack. Although the challenges they face are not of the same nature, both women experience the same sequence of events beginning with trauma, followed by a complete depletion of their self-esteem and finally a renewal through help from others around them. Although their environments are different, they undergo similar changes in their outlook and behavior in the face of their difficulties. In Little Bee and Incendiary, both characters undergo traumatic experiences that cause them to lose confidence in themselves and their hope for a better world. Additionally, these two characters are placed in extremely different situations, but they both have their lives exacerbated by the experiences they have. Little Bee, a sixteen-year-old Nigerian who travels to England to escape conditions in her country, finds herself confined in an immigration detention center because she does not have legal documents proving her age. Additionally, during her confinement, Little Bee strives to protect herself from people in...... middle of paper......at this point, all the hope she was trying to accumulate since the bombardment is completely exhausted. She discovers the corruption plaguing the city which she strives to protect as best she can and with her time. This is also where the character's development takes place and is clear to the reader. Instead of letting her emotions get to her like before, the narrator tries to focus on the positive aspects of the situation and remain optimistic. Overall, Little Bee and the narrator are victims of traumatic and distressing experiences that plunge their lives into darkness. However, they both find a branch of hope to cling to before reaching the bottom; with the help of those around them. Ultimately, both characters undergo immense changes as they develop their courage and emotional strength to break down the barriers that separate them from a better life..
