    Throughout American history, we have seen the United States become more progressive in its social issues, such as the abolition of slavery, women's suffrage and civil law. Rights movement. But over time, we encountered another group facing discrimination: homosexuals. Some states are doing their best to grant equal rights to homosexuals so that they are respected the same as everyone else. But in many states, such as Kansas and Arizona, private corporations and businesses have the right to refuse same-sex couples if it interferes with their religious beliefs. Both of these states also included places like hospitals where gay people can be denied medical care. These laws are very inhumane and harm a large part of the population today. But what if people in states like Kansas and Arizona thought it was okay to put these laws in place? In the short story “Two Kinds” by Amy Tan, the mother in the story tries to do what is best for her daughter to become a world-famous prodigy. This problem could also be related to the short story "Those Who Walk Away from Omelas", by Ursula K. LeGuin, in which the residents of Omelas are happy in their lives but also see that there is this person who sleeps in a closet and is treated like animals, but continues their life. There are people who speak out against these hateful laws against homosexuals, but there is also a group of people who stay silent and say nothing for fear of being labeled with words like "gay" or "faggot". ". The two stories have a deep connection to each other in that they affect citizens' different reactions to laws that limit the lives of others.
