    'The Listeners' by Walter De La Mare is a narrative poem. He tells us about a traveler who arrives at a house and knocks but no one answers. He tries to punch a few more times but gets away. There are 36 lines in this poem and all the other words rhyme. We know that the poem takes place in a dark forest since the word “forest” is used at the beginning of the poem. Many ancient words are used throughout the poem. We don't use these words now, so we know the poem takes place a long time ago. The poet also describes a “turret,” which is a small bird tower. Only very old houses have them near their front door, so the poet suggests that this poem is from a long time ago and the house is old. The Traveler has come from afar, but we are not told where he comes from. from or who he is. The Traveler strikes several times. The poet creates suspense every time he strikes.
