  • Essay / The Effects of Prenatal Substance Abuse on Women

It is crucial for a woman to maintain good health throughout pregnancy. Not only for her, but also for the well-being of the unborn baby. Anything consumed during pregnancy will affect both the mother and the growing fetus (child). Once a woman becomes pregnant, it is recommended that she change her eating habits, exercise, visit the doctor regularly, and make changes necessary for a healthy pregnancy . Most importantly, a pregnant woman should always avoid drug addiction because of the threat it poses. Drug addiction is a problem that exists around the world and affects men, women and children at all levels of society. Prenatal drug abuse remains a major problem in the United States and poses a significant health risk to the growing baby (Behnke & Smith, 2013). Treatment 4 of addiction (T4a) mentions that approximately 2 to 3% of congenital deficiencies are the consequences of the consumption of drugs other than alcohol. Drugs, alcohol or any other substance are known to have dangerous effects on the fetus. All drugs that cross the placenta have an effect on the fetus (Behnke & Smith, 2013). Drug abuse can be harmful because the placenta connects mother and child. Therefore, whatever the mother takes into her body will be shared with the growing child. If the mother uses a drug, the child will be affected. At this stage, the baby (fetus) is very sensitive to medications and cannot eliminate medications successfully like the mother can. Therefore, all chemicals can build up to very extreme levels in the child's system and can also cause damage that will last a lifetime. The effects of perinatal drug consumption are influenced by the stage of development of information on disability which will expand their knowledge. They will be able to come up with better teaching methods and strategies to teach these students. Since then, they have a better understanding of disability. CONCLUSIONAs you can see, drug and alcohol use during pregnancy can be very dangerous. It can affect the baby's size, different parts of the body, and also cause learning, emotional, and physical problems that can last a lifetime. Lingen (2012) reported that pregnancy can change the way the body processes drugs, making certain drugs even more dangerous for mother and baby. Prevention of alcohol abuse must begin in school educational programs, they must be created to primarily address individuals and groups at high risk. Later, a motivational intervention to reduce the risk of pregnancy exposed to alcohol in women (Ornoy & Ergaz, 2010).
