  • Essay / Should we continue human cloning? - 814

Unlike some movies, real-life cloning does not produce an exact replica of someone. One type of cloning that occurs naturally is the birth of identical twins (“What is cloning?”). Somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT) is a type of cloning that must be performed in a laboratory. In SCNT, they remove the nucleolus of an egg cell, replace it with the nucleolus of a somatic cell (body cell with two complete sets of chromosomes), and divide the egg cell into a blastocyst (“What is cloning? There are two main controversial types of cloning originating from SCNT: reproductive and therapeutic cloning. Reproductive cloning involves the creation of another life and should be banned. “In therapeutic cloning… there is no implantation into the uterus to create a child” (Murnaghan). It is used to create stem cells for medical use and can save lives. The medical possibilities of stem cells are immense and must absolutely be exploited with caution. People who wish to resort to reproductive cloning do so primarily for reasons of infertility. For some people who are having trouble conceiving a child and desperately want one, reproductive cloning would be a godsend. “If doctors could make many identical copies of an embryo, they could avoid having to give women month after month powerful drugs to force their ovaries to expel multiple eggs” (Kolata). This would save time and money. Cloning would also provide an option for someone who wishes to have a child genetically related to them but is completely sterile. Although reproductive cloning helps with infertility problems, it is extremely dangerous and unethical. Previous experiments with reproductive cloning on animals have produced terrible results. «F...... middle of paper...... 2014. .The cloning process. Digital image. Gurukpo.
