    As we all know, while a child is in the womb, it is imperative that the mother provides the fetus with the appropriate amount of nutrition so as not to hinder development and health of the child. If a household is food insecure and the mother is unable to acquire adequate nutrition, this can have adverse effects after delivery. Lack of adequate nutrition can lead to birth defects and lifelong nutrition-related diseases, such as anemia. Some examples of birth defects include “low birth weight,” “premature birth,” and “IUGR.” Low birth weight can be defined as a birth weight less than 2,500 g; it can result from premature delivery, intrauterine growth restriction, or a combination of both. Low birth weight is a major secondary cause in 40–80% of neonatal deaths, 98% of which occur in developing countries. (Kathleen Abu-saad and Drora Fraser 2) Premature birth is defined as “gestational age less than 37 completed weeks.” “It is the leading cause of infant mortality among infants with non-fatal birth defects (Kathleen Abu-saad and Drora Fraser 2). Both of these birth defects can contribute to malnutrition during the developmental stages of the fetus. The cost of hospitalization and postpartum treatment can be extremely high, which can inadvertently contribute to household food insecurity.
