Essay / Voluntary Military Service - 1064
Military service should be voluntary because of the choices and sacrifices service members must make. As a military child, I understand what military service can do to lifestyles, relationships, and individuals. Time spent serving in the military can uproot or separate families and friends and destroy those relationships. Where you live and how you live will change. The training, expectations, and things the military forces you to do will change people and not always for the better. The military is not for everyone and making service mandatory will cause more problems for our nation and its people than it is worth. Over the course of my life, I have lived in six different places for sixteen years and spent years separated from my mother because of the military. Not having a stable environment growing up had its pros and cons, but losing friends and constantly changing schools was always difficult. The military had forced my mother to move every three years, take classes that took her away from her family, and survive on her military salary. The path my mother chose to follow in her career was even one that the military considered family oriented. It was okay because it was his choice to live that way. However, some people are not willing to make these sacrifices because that is not how they want to spend their lives and therefore they should not be forced to. Not everyone has the strength to serve their country through military service or is disciplined enough to successfully obey. Furthermore, without any of these qualities, the policy of zero failure is lost and this puts our country at risk. To be productive in the military, you must be self-motivated to fully serve your country...... middle of paper ...... compulsory military service is not a productive choice. When you send your loved ones into the military they never come back, the person who comes back will be different in many ways or left together. The things you had before may disappear or change so drastically that they will be foreign to you. Once familiar homes, loved ones and children will be different. These are things that are lost when a person chooses to serve their nation and not everyone can cope with the losses that follow. The military makes no promises and is there to serve its country and not to foster an environment of comfort for its personnel. Voluntary service is so important because it gives our citizens the choice to live their lives the way they want. The consequences of compulsory service would weigh on the collective soul of America, could our country survive the burden?
