Many deaf people have been discriminated against and not accepted by the community. They were considered disabled and people had their own judgment. As I became more familiar with autism culture, I noticed the same thing. Many people will not accept autistic children because of their behaviors. The book, Sibling and Autism, defines autism as: “A neurological disorder characterized by sensory overstimulation, difficulty processing stimuli, and challenges in social interaction. » (Kingsley, 2011, p. 14) They will see these children different from other children. Not only by the community but also by the family. Some families who have an autistic child feel isolated. In fact, in a book called Siblings and Autism, they talk about a girl named Debra who had an autistic brother. She mentions that her family feels isolated because of an autistic child. However, Debra knew she wasn't the only sister with an autistic brother. Additionally, as a sister, she accepted her brother for who he was and embraced his uniqueness.
