Riparian zones are the areas that surround rivers, streams, lakes, etc. The word “ripa” means shore in Latin. They constitute the transition zone between aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. Only recently have riparian areas been seen as important places, rather than “sacrifice” areas that could be abandoned for livestock and crops. They occupy a small part of our planet, but they are essential to the ecosystems and water they surround. The roles of riparian zones are rather simple, but they are extremely important for vegetation, wildlife, water and for us. Riparian zones are the “intermediary” places between terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. It allows transport between aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems and the distribution of nutrients, which contributes to the balance of surrounding ecosystems. Riparian areas are essential to stopping erosion, which can be a major problem for farmers and surrounding areas.
