    ZPD refers to the area between what a child can accomplish independently and what they cannot accomplish at all (McLeod, 2014a). This common ground reflects the tasks and skills the child can succeed with support (McLeod, 2014a). Vygotsky believes that the learning that takes place in the ZPD is achieved through interactions with a more competent other, who may be a peer or an adult (McLeod, 2014a). Although Vygotsky acknowledges the influence of environmental factors, he argues that cognitive development relies on inherited attributes (McLeod, 2014a). Vygotsky would say that Jane can only learn to read if she is enrolled in the ZPD for the required skills and if another more competent person (i.e. her mother, a teacher, etc.) provides her
