  • Essay / Tess of the D'Urbervilles by THomas Hardy - 704

Tess of the D'Urbervilles is a film based on a novel by Thomas Hardy. The story features a young girl named Tess who will be the victim, prey and sometimes lover of many men. She will experience this without ever understanding what these men want from her. The first man in her life was her father, John Durbeyfield. He was a drunken farmer. John discovers from the local priest that he is related to the local noble family of Urbervilles. After discovering this information, the farmer and his wife immediately send their daughter-in-law, Tess, to meet and introduce the d'Urbervilles and if all goes well, to gain a position in their household. Tess is almost immediately seduced by one of her cousins. . She became pregnant, but her child died shortly after birth. She never tells the cousin that their child died. But later, after falling in love with and marrying a local minister's son, she confesses her past. It's too much for her new husband to handle. He "married" because he was attracted to Tess's humble origins. Back then, men married into lower classes if the woman was beautiful, as this would make the man look good. Clearly, women were not well respected. But he is not ready to accept the reality of his past. He goes on a bizarre mission to South America. While on assignment in South America, Tess must do heavy manual labor for pennies an hour. She finally finds her cousin, who is not a real bastard. She complains that he should have known about her pregnancy. She becomes his lover. Then her new husband returns, and the physical and psychological competition for Tess ends in tragedy. Tess des d'Urbervil...... middle of paper ......One truth we learn about human nature is that men often use women for their looks because that's the only thing that makes them attracted. As soon as women lose their beauty, or if beauty comes with too much baggage, men back away, leaving women hurt. Another truth we learn about human nature is that people are so quick to judge someone without getting to know them. An example is high school classes where a student might ask a question that everyone already knows can be called stupid or slow. Maybe the child wasn't paying attention or maybe he needs to be taught in a different way. The final truth we learn about human nature comes from the past and how poorly women were treated back then. Women had no rights and basically had to worship the ground their husbands walked on..
