  • Essay / Microorganisms and the Great Irish Potato Famine

Microorganism refers to a small organism often called a microbe. A microbe is a single-celled organism so small that millions can fit through the eye of a needle. Microbes are known to be the oldest form of life on Earth, they can live individually or come together in communities. Microbes live everywhere. Everywhere you can think of, microbes live. They can be found in air, soil, water and are present in and on our own bodies. Microbes are also known to live at temperatures below -20 degrees Celsius and at temperatures above the boiling point. These tiny organisms include bacteria, archaea, fungi and protists. Bacteria and fungi are a commonly known form of microbe, unlike archaea which are similar to bacteria but appear to have certain traits that are not present in any true bacteria. Protists include different types of mold and algae. Fungi are eukaryotic organisms that are unicellular or multicellular organisms, their DNA containing chromosomes is enclosed in a nucleus inside their cells. The cell structure of fungi is very similar to that of plants, however, fungi do not carry out photosynthesis. Fungi are often known to be a nuisance when found in a person's home, whether on food, walls, or even the floor. People naturally find it disturbing and dirty, but there are good types of mushrooms, often called friendly mushrooms. In 1928, penicillin, one of the most famous antibiotics, was discovered, derived from a fungus called Penicillium. This discovery has since had a huge impact on helping people around the world. However, it seems that's not all: there are nasty fungi that can cause disease in plants, animals and humans. A famous one being Phytophthora infestans. This...... middle of paper ...... driving down the road to buy a new fresh loaf of bread. Most people are unaware that the colored spots visible on food are just surface spores that allow mold to reproduce and that in fact, just like plants, mold has roots that penetrate deep into food . So scraping that part of the bread doesn't stop the person from consuming a bite of mushroom, which doesn't sound very good. This fungus is not expected to kill a person by consuming it, however, moldy foods can also contain invisible bacteria that grow with mold. If the spores are released into the air, they are small enough to be inhaled and breathe in large quantities of these spores. can have negative impacts on health. Health risks may include: Irritation of the eyes, nose and throat, coughing and phlegm buildup, wheezing and shortness of breath, asthma symptoms and allergic reactions..
