Essay / Ethnographic review of Thier Head's songs: Music and...
We all know the way children interact and play together. Through these interactions, it is clear that their curiosity, energetic attitude and friendliness are visible. However, an important part of their interactions is neglected. Often we don't think much about children humming a tune or combining little syllables into a little song, but if we paid attention, we could see how music is so deeply integrated into a child's life. After reading “Songs in Their Heads: Music and Its Meaning in Children's Lives” by Patricia Shehan Campbell, it became clear to me that children have a concept of music from a very young age and, in many cases, many cases, their knowledge of music. is not taught to them at school. This ethnography, written and told from Campbell's perspective, shares her experiences as she pursues her goal of studying musical culture among children in hopes of providing insight into how music plays a role in the lives of children of all ages. This ethnography is divided into three different sections, the first detailing the different periods of Campbell's observation. During his studies on the subject, Campbell spent time in different settings (such as a school bus, a cafeteria, a music class, and in a playground) in hopes of observing their behavior and creating detailed field notes to provide details of their interactions and use of music. In the second section, Campbell shares his conversations with several different children. Through these conversations, we get a taste of how music can be integrated into many different aspects of children's lives. The third section focuses on what music means to children as well as how it can play a role or be integrated into diff...... middle of paper ......gear, a large Some of children's music is based on their creativity or social constructs. I found this book fascinating and was able to relate it to my own childhood experiences, singing on the playground or drumming on the dining room tables. I think music is an incredible way to express so many different emotions. Whether someone picks up an instrument, sings, writes music and lyrics, or simply enjoys listening to their favorite band, music has a powerful connotation in each of our lives. I think musical expression should be an option from a young age and it's obvious that many children have their own ideas of what music is and incorporate it into their lives in their own way.
