  • Essay / Facebook and the underrated genius of Mark...

Katz identified 3 general skills related to management, namely conceptual skills, people skills and technical skills (Daft, 2010). Mark Zuckerberg as a Chief Executive Officer (CEO) has conceptual skills as he can plan the present and the future. Zuckerberg's decision to partner with Microsoft on an advertising deal in 2006 in the United States, and then internationally in 2011, allowed Facebook to continue its growth as a technology company (Stone , 2007). Zuckerberg also integrated the Bing search engine into Facebook in order to ensure the continued existence of Facebook, as users can perceive Facebook as more than just an ordinary social networking site (Bolm, n.d.). According to Bolm (n.d.), Bing states that a large portion of society refers to their friends before making decisions to purchase things and this phenomenon is known as the "friend effect." He recognizes that to be successful, one must be able to work with and through people. Zuckerberg's management style of having a flexible workplace demonstrates his people skills as a manager (Yulianto, 2011). His ability to lead, motivate, increase and realize the potential of his colleagues is considered a crucial skill for a manager. The Hackathon that Zuckerberg organizes within his company allows for both critical and creative thinking. This promotes cooperation and helps build team spirit and better social bonds among employees, not only with themselves but also with other staff (Carlson, 2008). Zuckerberg doesn't lack technical skills either. Its ability to create applications to this day allows it to play a proactive role in the development of the company (Arrington, 2010). It plays a number of diverse roles...... middle of paper ......ing a "good" pair of shoes. His fame hasn't changed his personal life either. He maintained his relationship with his high school sweetheart and did not succumb to the media's constant invasion of his private life. His humility keeps his ego in check. Keeping your ego in check is what makes Facebook successful today. He doesn't hesitate to ask for help, even though his decisions have brought him to where he is today. His decision to hire Sheryl Sandberg who reorganized the company proves that he is a person who is not afraid to make difficult decisions, but is also able to ask for help when necessary ( Swisher, 2008). A good manager is one who is ready to listen to others as only a fool is sure of himself. Above all, he sets an example. He does things the right way and he does the right things. A place for everything and everything in its place.
