  • Essay / Cloning and Human Cloning - 1516

Would you like to clone an exact replica of someone you admire or love? According to author Alice Park in the article “Scientists report first success in cloning human stem cells,” scientists have successfully created embryonic stem cell lines from human skin cells. Alice goes on to say that human stem cells can develop into muscles, nerves, or other cells that make up the body's tissues. The definition of cloning is the creation of a living organism that has an exact copy of the genetic material of another (Learn Genetics). Scientists around the world have conducted research into how human stem cells can be made. According to Dr. Shoukhrat Mitalipov, a professor at Oregon Health Sciences University, stem cells help patients who cannot find a match for organs or bone marrow. Therefore, those organs with the exact genetic material will produce a higher percentage of matching organs for patients in need of an organ transplant. But these techniques require doctors to participate in the process that occurs in nature, namely the fusion of a sperm from a man's body with an egg from a woman's body. This level of scientific involvement in the creation of human life makes many people uncomfortable. On the contrary, the cloning of human babies could give infertile couples the possibility of creating a cloned baby. Likewise, cloning should be considered as part of the healthcare system, as it will give transplant patients a greater chance of survival and create cloned babies for infertile couples.
