Essay / Amendment to Title IX - 2064
In 1972, after the feminist movement, a bill was created to help increase the hiring rates and employment practices of federally funded institutions for women. The proposed amendment first gained attention in 1969 when a professor and future women's rights activist, Bernice Sandler, used executive orders created by President Johnson years earlier to fight for her position at the University of Maryland. Sandler encouraged and filed his first complaint with the Department of Labor office that his rights were not being addressed. The complaint went further and was forwarded not only to the University of Maryland, but also to universities that showed low admission rates of female employees. Sandler later joined NOW (National Organization for Women) and worked with the Woman's Equity Action League (WEAL). Combined, Sandler filed 250 complaints against colleges across the country. After the complaints were filed, Bernice Sandler joined Rep. Judith Green's Higher Education Subcommittee and appeared at a Congressional meeting on women's rights. That's when Title IX was first proposed by Green and Sandler during the meeting. With the help of Congresswoman Patsy T. Mink, Title IX was finally introduced and drafted. The amendment had a huge impact on female college athletes, but was not mentioned at the meeting. According to Title IX of Wikipedia, "No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination in any educational or of an activity benefiting from federal financial assistance. .."The concern of the current Title IX amendment has been revised to reflect gender equality, giving women the same opportunity as men to obtain...... middle of document... ...education government disapproves of team cuts in order to comply with Title IX (Wikipedia). the choice of schools to cut back on sports that do not bring in revenue, but they must do so within their budget and comply with the rules of the amendment I hope they can find a way to maintain equality between the. two sexes using the same budget I remain optimistic that the situation will only improve when the economy begins to improve. Until then, Title IX will continue to suppress men's sports for years. unless they can find outsourced money, like private schools do, to keep all their sports. Our education system has a lot to improve. I also think California is hit the hardest because it's in a much worse financial crisis than other states..
