  • Essay / Positive effects of social media influence on...

Teenagers who use social media a lot tend to have poor time management skills; they spend too much time on social media and forget about tasks at hand. “When alerted to new activity on a social networking site… users take an average of twenty to twenty-five minutes to return to the original task.” (ProCon.org). Many social media users will be easily distracted when they receive a new notification on social media. Many teens have ADHD, also known as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, which means they already have a lower attention span. When many children and adolescents suffer from this disorder, social media poses a higher risk. Today's teenagers are so addicted to social media that they spend a lot of time on these sites. “40 percent of eight to eighteen year olds spend 54 minutes per day on social media sites” (ProCon.org). Basically, teenagers spend at least an hour a day on social media on average. That's a lot of time they could be using to do other things. “…According to a study by an online doctoral student, students spend approximately 100 minutes per day on Facebook” (Wang, Chen, Liang). This is only on the social networking site Facebook, what about other sites like Twitter or Instagram? The time students waste could be spent doing something to improve their grades due to social constraints.
