Essay / Pacific War - 691
In Flags of our Fathers, shows of realism ran throughout the film. Clint Eastwood, the director of the film, features three soldiers; John “Doc” Bradley, René Gagnon and Ira Hayes, who would later be considered heroes after raising the American flag during the Battle of Iwo Jima. Eastwood strived to provide as much realism as possible to viewers through the various scenes, even though some of them may have actually happened; some did not. Unlike many other Hollywood war films, the characters in Flags of Our Fathers are not fictional. Following the scene where the characters get off the boats and head to the island's beaches follows the story as it unfolded. The film also shows how some of the main characters suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder, which has affected soldiers throughout their history. Ira Haynes is known to suffer from this disorder as he suffers from survivor's guilt, depression, social dysfunction, and alcohol abuse to temporarily soothe his psychic pain he suffered from the war. Doc Bradley suffers from a constant struggle as he experiences symptoms of insomnia and survivor's guilt just like in real life. Throughout the film, the characters have flashbacks of the battle as they are cheered for being the ones in the photo of the raised flag that had been used as a propaganda image to get Americans to support the war. Another little-known fact revealed by the film is that the Army initially made a mistake in identifying one of the Marines in the photograph, which the press became aware of after the war ended. While Doc's son has written a book about his journey during World War II, he refuses to recount certain details of the battle and often dreams of the night with Iggy in the foxhole as a sign of...... middle of paper... ...This has contributed to the popular view of this era in American history because there are almost no inaccuracies in the way Clint Eastwood directed the film. All the information offered by the film is as accurate as it could be. Daily battles of soldiers; Flags of Our Fathers shows exactly the effects that wars have on human beings. The film successfully demystifies the story behind the photograph of the American flag raised on Iwo Jima. This helps Americans know the story behind a world-famous paragraph that circulated during World War II. The main reason for this is that the film is based on a non-fiction book and the writers did everything they could to follow the book exactly as it was written. We can assume that Eastwood did his research and as the film takes few liberties with the book, the film is one of the most accurate war films ever made..
