Essay / Summertime Sadness by Lana Del Ray - 1112
A song that has been important to me since moving to Maryland would be “Summertime Sadness” by Lana Del Ray. The entire album the song comes from is one of my personal favorites of all time. I remember seeing her for the first time on Saturday Night Live where she was the musical guest. She performed her popular single “Video Games” from her album Born to Die. His performance was not at all theatrical; in fact, it was very minimalist. The performance was meant to be solely about the song and not specifically about its showmanship. Critics gave it negative reviews for its lack of energy and the performance's lack of emotion. It just made me more intrigued by his music. I downloaded his album right after and didn't really have time to listen to it until the summer started, at the start of my freshman year at Maryland. I'd be lying if I didn't say I had a huge crush on her, which also added to my appreciation for her music. One song on the album that was most important to me was “Summertime Sadness.” The song described my feelings about leaving home for school and starting a new chapter in my life. The song genre is also a subgenre of rock which inspired the bands/producers Dr. Warfield taught our class. Her song is about her feelings of sadness that come at the end of summer; The main theme concerns Lana and her summer lover who must separate at the end of the summer and her emotions regarding the timing of this final meeting. Summer romances are always short and fun, but ending the summer relationship is always a little sad and depressing. Although I personally don't identify with a romantic experience from last summer, the feelings she describes in the song middle of paper...... were her voice to add mystery and a definite sound only applicable. in Del Ray. Personally, I think his new persona creates an intriguing appearance that leads to artistic music. Lana even says: “I was a singer, not very popular, who once dreamed of becoming a beautiful poet” (Staff). His lyrics illustrate this perfectly as each song sounds like a piece that could be read in a café accompanied by thank you shots from the audience. Works Cited “Far from Dusty.” New statesman.
