    However, famous people seem to embrace "the dominant dream machine" after all, it's American culture and where would we be without our "colosseum / full of blinding lights and tigers,” another powerful one that helps describe how we became a modern Rome. The second poem analyzed is In Praise of Their Divorce, and the main idea is that divorce could be a good thing, even if it is frowned upon in today's society. Divorce is increasingly prevalent in American culture, and Hoagland uses metaphors and similes to illustrate this image. For example, in the second stanza Hoagland wrote: "this man and woman lying in different directions, / like pilgrims in a proverb", here the use of alliteration is in "different directions" and “pilgrims in a proverb,” while line 4 is also a simile. Hoagland also refers to marriage as an earthquake using hyperbole when he writes in line 10 "moving the plates of earth away from each other.”
