Human rights violations associated with drug control policies present in different countries are not only perpetrated by individual governments but by the drug control system itself (Joanne Csete p.1). The drug control system, through its objectives, current operation, interpretation and implementation of policies, makes abuse more likely to occur. It is obvious that the system focuses its energy and all other resources on illicit manufacturing or production, etc. while intentionally avoiding fighting important but controversial issues simply to preserve its international consensus. Therefore, it is fair to say that human rights violations associated with drug control policies are systematic in nature, that it is the drug control system itself that is causing the violations other international laws and that, if we are to put an end to these violations, Faced with these abuses, we must immediately attempt to remedy the weaknesses and institutional shortcomings of the international drug control regime itself (Barret Damon ). Conclusion This paper has highlighted some of the human rights violations associated with drug control efforts. Abuses, even if not enshrined in the conventions, have been shown to be present due to current drug control efforts or system. The various institutions of the United Nations drug control system have a duty not to apply drug control measures outside of other international laws. This paper has outlined some of the steps that can be taken by different stakeholders in the UN drug control system to ensure that human rights are not violated. A real change will also be visible in the drug control system when governments and different organizations, for example donors, start putting pressure on international institutions on this issue...
