  • Essay / The Barbaric Nature of Animal Testing - 898

Every year, thousands of mice, dogs, primates and other animals are victims of vivisection around the world. These experiments are inhumane, ineffective and absolutely useless when other testing methods exist. These animals suffer painful suffering, and sometimes even death, as a result of scientific research into the effects of drugs, cosmetics, food additives and other chemicals. Animal testing is an act of barbarity, raising animals to be victims. of crude experiments then euthanized is cruel. An eye irritation test is a test in which albino rabbits are given a substance in their eyes held open with clips for seven to eighteen days. Rabbits are confined in stocks with only their heads protruding while experimenters record damage to the eye tissue which can vary from swollen eyelids, inflamed irises, ulcerations, bleeding, massive deterioration and blindness. Many rabbits break their necks as they struggle to escape the pain. Another wild test is the acute toxicity test, also known as lethal doses or poisoning tests. This test determines the amount of a substance that will kill a percentage of a group of animals tested. Substances are introduced into the animal's body through tubes to the stomach, cuts in the throat, introduced into the eyes, mixed with food or inhaled through a gas mask. Reactions to this test may include seizures, heavy breathing, diarrhea, constipation, emaciation, writhing, rash, and bleeding. The testing period continues until at least half of the animals die, approximately two to four weeks. Keep in mind that anesthesia is absent during these procedures. Although I realize that many people want their makeup, medications and other products... middle of paper ...... nation with effective results. Thanks to mathematical combinations, unnecessary tests should not be carried out on animals (Animal Testing: Toxic & Tragic). The use of corneas from eye banks is a substitute that would relieve animals of eye irritation testing. Eye banks contain the corneas of the deceased, whether human or animal. Using these corneas would be a quicker, less stressful way for scientists to get better results and not have to worry about the animals being in pain. Animals should not be victims of vivisection when they have just as much right to be here as we do. . The money used for animal testing could be used for a project with better potential. Animal testing should not be acceptable given all the alternatives that technology has the power to provide. Animal abuse in medical experiments is a failing of humanity, the sooner we put an end to it, the better.
