International Paper Company is the world's largest pulp and paper company with manufacturing operations in North America, Europe, Latin America, Russia, Asia and North Africa. When it began on January 31, 1898 in Albany, New York, it was through the merger of 17 pulp and paper mills of varying sizes, technological advancements and capacities. However, even then, International Paper was an industry leader as the nation's largest producer of newsprint. It supplied sixty percent of all newsprint sold in the United States at the time and exported its products to Argentina, Australia, and England. Under its first president, International Paper established the pulp and paper industry's first laboratory, as well as participating in the industry's first collective bargaining agreement and implementing a progressive timber harvesting system that protected young trees.
