  • Essay / A summary of Martin Luther King's autobiography

proved extremely useful in helping me understand King's speech. Although none of the books were comprehensive, they provided vital information that made my research more effective. In my opinion, The Dream, by Drew D. Hansen, proved to be the strongest composition because it provided information that was overlooked in my other selections. This work details the events before, during and after his "I Have a Dream" speech. At the same time, he also addressed important aspects of his philosophy that later became the driving force behind his march on Washington. Additionally, this book provided charts comparing the written notes of King's sermons and speeches to the actual dialogue given. Accordingly, he used the same technique to explain and organize his metaphorical references. On the other hand, I found “The Autobiography of Martin Luther King Jr.” to be the weakest of the three books. Since this book highlights King's entire life, the "I Have a Dream" portion was somewhat short and not very detailed compared to the other selections. Additionally, due to the lack of third-person analysis, it seemed one-dimensional and monotonous. Because of these issues, I was less interested in citing the documents than in understanding King's thinking.
