Essay / Learning Theory of Instructional Design - 959
Learning Theory of Instructional DesignThe instructions created by teachers and trainers in different education and training institutes as well as in training programs of different organizations, which include “educational experiences that help make learning a better experience by enabling and making the process of acquiring related and relevant knowledge and skills more effective, attractive in nature and effective for the learner; is known as “instructional design.” There are various theories under "instructional design", such as learning theory, pedagogical theory, and instructional theory. The connection between learning theory and educational practice was proposed and envisioned by John Dewey (1910). But it was Edward Thorndike (1913) who explored the various associated principles of learning theory, which teachers can use and apply directly to design their teaching materials. There are two theories, namely "elaboration theory" and "linking theory", which provide a bridge for the transition between the instructional design process, learning theory, instructional design methodology and educational theory. I selected “elaboration theory” to describe how it can be applied to the design of instructional materials. Elaboration theory (Reigeluth & Stein, 1993) is the learning theory of instructional design, which aims for teachers and trainers to focus on "how to teach" rather than "how and why." . people learn different things. The major concern of elaboration theory is the organization of teaching material and the structure provided to it by the instructor (mostly teachers). Here the emphasis is on organization and structure rather than material...... middle of paper ...... material. Problems that can arise when using an invalid learning theory when designing instructional materials include: • Instructions can become confusing and inconsistent for learners. Inconsistency can decrease students' motivation as well as their learning experience. • Instructional materials are not organized and structured according to the learning theory of instructional design; the teacher may miss some points here and there and thus the process of learning and teaching remains incomplete and the process of acquiring knowledge becomes ineffective. • The general relationship between different parts of a specific teaching material cannot be established and taught effectively to the learner. and thus the whole process of teaching fails; whether invalid learning theory is used when designing teaching materials.
