  • Essay / The Million Man March by Maya Angelou - 1009

Nearly a million people deprived of any type of human rights stood up against the government to bring about change. Voices of the People comes from the poem “A Million Man March” by Maya Angelou which proves that together, people can make a big difference even when they oppose the government. Before this big change happened, even though the dark-skinned part of the nation was treated horribly and pushed to the limit, it was explained using pictures. Additionally, a verse was repeated very often to remind people of the horrors they had to go through and it's time for change using the power of metaphors. Finally, during the march, there were quite a few rehearsals which were used to make the people stronger and more united by instilling the idea of change in people's heads so that no one backs down. After years of torture and horror, dark-skinned people finally have rights. The author did not just describe the lives of dark-skinned people, but in doing so she used a lot of good images. Using images, Maya Angelou conveyed a powerful message of life before the change: “You couldn't even call my name. You were helpless and so was I” (Million Man March, lines 8-9). “You couldn't even scream my name” shows how weak all the people were (they couldn't even speak). Another meaning of this is that the people had such insignificant power that they were even forbidden to speak (relating to fundamental rights). “You Were Helpless, So Was Me” shows that people are so controlled that they can't even help each other or do anything other than what they were told to do. This proves that people were deprived of their freedom, but they were also treated like dirt and were humiliated. As cited in ...... middle of paper ...... the art is finished. In conclusion, the black people of America obtain human rights and begin to move from a very poor standard of living to a high standard of living. The first use of poetic devices in "The Million Man March" was imagery that created a very clear picture in the donners' minds of what was happening. Another poetic device used was metaphors which helped build imagery and sometimes even created dual or hidden meanings. Finally, repetition was used to show people their courage and strength while reminding them of their feelings from the past. Disenfranchised people were able to achieve the seemingly impossible and create change using the power of words. What made these words “powerful” was how they were used to express feelings, descriptions, and actions. Anyone can make a difference! Works Cited http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/million-man-march-poem/
