  • Essay / Intelligent Design: A True Theory - 1281

Sir Isaac Newton once said: “Gravity explains the motion of the planets, but it cannot explain who sets the planets in motion.” As a major contributor to modern physics with his discovery of gravity, Isaac Newton strongly believed in an intelligent designer who created the universe and humanity. According to the Discovery Institute (nd), "the theory of intelligent design holds that certain features of the universe and living things are best explained by an intelligent cause, and not by an undirected process such as natural selection" (para. 1). Although intelligent design is quickly being considered a scientific theory with over 50 peer-reviewed journals published, there is currently no tolerance for it being taught in the American public education system (Discovery Institute, 2012, para 2). Those who oppose the idea of intelligent design (ID) being taught in schools argue that it would be unconstitutional, going against the separation of church and state, and that ID does not should not be taught due to the significant amount of evidence supporting the theory of evolution. Proponents of ID taught in public schools argue that intelligent design is a scientific theory employing methods commonly used by other historical sciences to conclude that certain features of the universe and living things are best explained by a intelligent cause that evolution cannot explain. Intelligent design does not specifically discuss who or what designed the universe, but simply that something must be responsible for its role in creating intelligent beings. The American public education system must recognize that there is another substantial theory explaining the origin of life other than evolution.
