  • Essay / Why a Generation Acts the Way They Do:...

Why Young Men Are So Ugly by Tony Hoagland is a fantastic poem because I think it gives a hidden reason as to why a certain generation of people acts the way they do. When I read the title of the poem, I immediately noticed how well-known it was, which gave me the idea that perhaps the author was an outspoken person. The title was effective in getting me interested in the poem because it stood out and was not a topic I had ever read about before. Why Young Men Are So Ugly is a poet's explanation of what goes on in a young man's mind and inside his body, despite what that young man may show through his actions and his words. The fact that Tony Hoagland was once a young man himself, and so this need for explanation is somewhat personal. Hoagland explains an experience he had, which is probably why the poem clearly demonstrates familiarity with the subject. Personification is an extravagant and frequently used part of the poem. The first major and significant example of personification is found in the second stanza "Making metal ring like sledgehammers on iron/like dungeon prisoners rattling their chains." (Hoagland). These two lines created in my mind an apparent picture of what the author was describing was happening inside a young man's body. I thought that these lines could have been a comparison with the emotions that one can experience, a way for the author to explain what he might have felt, and gave me the feeling that he was shouting for someone understands some frustration. I thought the third stanza of Why Young Men Are So Ugly had a lot of meanings and hidden meanings. “That's why they scream in their tires at the stop sign/why they turn up the bass on the car...... middle of paper...... is the most important line in the poem. I think the author used personification here to make the image clearer to the reader and help them make the connection between the line and life. The verse gives the idea that the author had to overcome his own difficulties in life and describes how he felt in this poem. Why Young Men Are So Ugly by Tony Hoagland is a brilliant poem because it portrays one of society's stereotypes in a different and personal way. I think that by describing the physical and emotional aspects of what it might have felt like to go through the things that young men can go through in this poem, the author was able to grab my attention with the feeling of emotion behind it. the lines he wrote. I really liked this poem because I loved making connections between life and the stanzas in it and then relating it to what I know about judgment and struggle..
