  • Essay / Disadvantages of Genetic Modification of Plants - 1011

In our daily lives, we have a substantial need for food. Everyone on planet Earth needs food to survive day to day. So engineers began mutating plants and crops to create a better source of nutrition for the population. Scientists are pushing the boundaries to create the biggest harvests and, in turn, healthier people. Imagine what could happen if there were bigger harvests, more succulent fruits and nutritious vegetables. Our imaginations can run wild with the endless possibilities of genetically modifying foods. However, can we be absolutely certain that what we do to our food supply will benefit us in the long run? If a seemingly simple change in a plant's DNA actually harmed millions of people, it would be extremely detrimental to our society. Genetically modifying foods, such as fruits, vegetables and crops, could do more harm than good to the people who eat them and have a negative effect on the environment, by spreading and destroying other plants. According to the World Health Organization, “WHO,” all genetically modified foods currently in use have been evaluated for safety and are not likely to pose risks to human health. The WHO also warns that foods should be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. The World Health Organization is confident in the way it formulates its statement. They say “unlikely,” meaning it’s still possible that something detrimental could happen. A biologist named Arpad Pusztai has written 12 books and over 300 articles on genetic modification and is a master in the field. In a test to demonstrate that genetically enhanced foods were safe for the public, Pusztai fed DNA-edited potatoes to a group of lab rats. The results were shocking to Pu...... middle of paper ......es, Rick. “EarthSave – Dietary Intervention Programs to Achieve Health Independence.” EarthSave - Dietary intervention programs to achieve health independence.
