Essay / Prejudice and Racism in the Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad . Readers can also see how racist Europeans were towards black people, not just because they were made into slaves. We can see how Europeans seem to think that Africans are not equal to them. There are many examples of discrimination against women in this story. Women were looked down upon and seen as worth less than men, or not as important. Racism and discrimination are omnipresent in this novel. Joseph Conrad makes very disturbing and racist comments about black people. An example of this is when he says, “…the thought of their humanity as yours…Ugly” (Conrad). This shows what a complete racist Conrad was. The idea of a black man's humanity being compared to Conrad's was just plain ugly to Conrad. This is racism, pure and simple. Another example is the first time he saw a black man, he said: "A certain enormous Negro met in Haiti fixed my conception of blind, furious, irrational rage, as it manifests itself in the human animal until the end of my days. Afterwards, I dreamed for years" (Conrad). This remark by Conrad was disturbing and clearly racist because he repeatedly described the black man as a "nigger". Europeans were racist towards blacks. We can see from how Europeans seem to think that Africans are not equal to them because they are black. For example Conrad says: “the thought of their humanity as yours… Ugly” (Conrad) This just shows that when Conrad is. compared to a black man he is talked about because he is racist One of the reasons we say Europeans were racist is because they made black people their slaves The public can see people of color. work for white people and this shows that they were racist. Women are discriminated against throughout this book. There is no place in this book where a woman has a job equal to that of a man. can see that men don't treat women very well or with any respect throughout Heart of Darkness. For example, Kurtz had a mistress of some kind and she is described as a savage..
