  • Essay / Leadership - 2357

Leaders impact people's daily lives and futures. In good times and bad, strong leadership is always necessary. According to Fesler (1960), leadership is a social process; it cannot exist without a leader and without disciples. Leadership results from follower behavior that is goal-directed within some sort of organized framework. In short, leadership is a process by which a person influences others toward the achievement of group or organizational goals. As Keith (2003) says: “Leadership is ultimately about creating a way for people to help achieve something extraordinary.” The development of leadership studies involves three phases: trait theory, behavioral theory, and contingency theory. According to Robbins and Judge (2011), studies from the late 1960s are applied to the "great man" theory which states that leads are born to lead, that they are not like others and that they have particular traits. Researchers looked at the physical, mental and social characteristics of individuals. They should find out what types of traits mean that the people are the leader. However, Fry and Kriger (2009) indicated that research on leader traits ignored the needs of followers and did not provide explanations for the proposed relationship between individual characteristics and leadership; it is not a matter of considering the impact of situational factors that could moderate the relationship between leader traits and measures of leader effectiveness. Due to these drawbacks, trait theory is not successful and is generally abandoned. While recognizing the limitations of trait theory, leadership research has shifted toward the behaviors of leaders. Researchers are beginning to observe the relationship between leader behavior and effectiveness. The behavior... middle of paper ... behavior of the leader who will accomplish these tasks depends on subordinate and environmental contingency factors. In conclusion, there is no best way or universal style to manage an organization. A good one must think about the situation and find an appropriate leadership style. Although Anna Bligh's behavior is not completely identical to the effective style indicated by behavioral leadership studies, her style is nevertheless appropriate to the situation she encountered and consistent with the definition of effective leadership according to the contingency theory. His case is also proof that behavioral leadership has offered many types of leadership styles, but that a good leader generally should not use the same style with a group in a different situation. As contingency theory states: the most effective leadership is the style that matches current circumstances..
