When asked what type of state he wanted Italy to be, he described his ideal state as a place where the subordinates are "All in the State , none outside the state, none against the state. » (“Totalitarianism.”) This type of governmental structure and the objectives of this new state were to ensure “the total representation of the nation and the total direction of national objectives”. (Stanley) While dictatorships and tyranny are often associated in the same realm of totalitarianism, the totalitarian system is distinguished by the replacement of all other political institutions with new ones. Not to mention that totalitarianism removes all legal, social and political traditions and replaces them with whatever the state finds friendly and whatever corresponds to what the government wants its people to think, speak and believe. The fundamental characteristic of a totalitarian state is that the state seeks to control the thinking of the population. (Staudenmaier,) Totalitarianism is characterized by a strong, centralized, all-powerful, and oppressive government agency. It attempts to “monitor, control and direct all aspects of individual life through coercion and repression.” ("Totalitarianism.") Totalitarianism is closely associated with other political doctrines that advocate the principle of absolute power, such as absolutism, authoritarianism, autocracy, despotism.,
