  • Essay / The Kiss - 759

There are three main characters in this short story called “The Kiss”. Brantain, Nathalie and Harvy are the names of the characters who take us on a short journey to show us a glimpse of their lives together and the meaning of their brief interactions. Brantain is a young man who is insecure and therefore arouses little interest. While courting Nathalie, he learns that his attention has already been attracted by another gentleman named Harvy. Brantain sits at a distance from Nathalie and leaves little impression in the room. Aside from Brantain's mere presence, there is nothing else to indicate that there is anyone else in the room other than the lovely Nathalie. Thus leading to Harvy's entrance and his quick and direct contact with Nathalie taken in the form of a kiss. An obvious, familiar and welcome gesture under normal circumstances. Each character's answers are very different from each other and provide additional insight into their personality. Brantain's instinct is to immediately flee conflict. His flight response lends to a weaker personality who is not confident in taking charge of the situation. Harvy's state of bewilderment and lack of true remorse shows a mischievous side. Although sorry that Nathalie is upset, he is otherwise unapologetic for his actions. He demonstrates a solid and strong personality, tempered by real remorse for having upset Nathalie. Nathalie's reaction was one of panic and dismay. Kind of like the reaction of a spoiled child when caught doing something wrong. There was not a pang of guilt or unease for having deceived Brantain. She entered a mode of self-preservation. She is finally able to confront Brantain and offer him a fairly reasonable explanation for the...... middle of paper ......n and allowed a lie to continue and grow. This story was neither inspiring nor entertaining. The theme of the story I got from it is that money can be a bigger draw in marriage than attraction and desire. Often people are rubbish and fend for themselves with little remorse or regret. Although the attraction and personality instinct can be satisfied, people sometimes choose higher social status and money over emotional needs (or try to have both with two different people until they are caught). “The Kiss” is a representation of relationships through time. It is the reflection of personalities which tend to intertwine and which prove that there is not always a fairy tale ending. Although all three characters seem happy with their decisions, as a reader you hope to hear about something more extraordinary and happier..
