Pleasantville speaks to the radical changes that came to Americans as many began to modernize not only in terms of technology but also social reforms. Jennifer is David's sister who was obsessed with an old TV show called Pleasantville which depicted the perfect American family. Jennifer is a self-obsessed teenager who only cares about boys, smokes cigarettes, and basically doesn't follow society's norms. After being transported into the TV show by a mysterious old man, she is forced to act like the other teenagers even though she is the complete opposite of them. After becoming the Mary Sue persona, she begins to change others around her. Instead of their actions being dictated by external factors such as the city council and what seems to be right, they begin to make their own decisions. The women on the show, including Jennifer, had very limited rights in a man's world. They were seen as housewives, responsible for cooking and cleaning for the family, but Jennifer, being Jennifer, begins to preach that they don't have to hide. The quality of life is much better if they can accept change. They invent new beliefs, such as openly showing affection, which greatly worries adults.
