The organization must know itself, the individuals who work for it and the reality that exists. This ties in with the idea of the poetic principle. This is one of many theories used to understand Appreciative Inquiry but, to me, it is the most important step leading to the 4D cycle. An organization cannot reach the first stage of discovery without the right attitude towards each individual and their value. The poetic principle believes that there is a history between the individual and the organization. Both can rely on each other to gather information to create a better future; these may be facts, feelings or experiences from members. This gives the organization the opportunity to really look at itself and people and assess what they really want. (Fifolt, Lander, 2013, p. 21). It's a perfect first step leading to 4D
